VDI

The terms VDI, XDI and DDI all refer to the same technique of using a hardware virtualization layer to offer virtualized workstations. The xDI concept and the hardware virtualization layer make it possible to create a flexible and dynamic way of offering desktops; it even become possible to create a workstation on the fly. xDI is one of the trends in the ICT infrastructures at this moment.

xDI scenarios include:

  • Using xDI as an add-on in an SBC environment to host applications that cannot run on Terminal Servers out of the data centre.
  • Offering workstations via a secure connection outside the company at any time.
  • Offering other operating systems or additional places of work without the purchase of additional client hardware.
  • The flexible and dynamic assignment of workstations to end users.

Some examples of xDI products are Citrix XenDesktop, VMWare View and Quest vWorkspace.
